Students recycle while creating a masterpiece.

Objective

The purpose of the activity is for students to create a masterpiece with photographs from magazines.

Instructions

Students are to draw a simple picture with minimum detail. Outlines of a house, strawberry, bear, cartoon character, or flower are some examples that students may draw. After students have drawn the picture, they will outline the drawing in black permanent marker.

Students are to tear or cut paper from the magazines to fill in the background of their drawing. Students should use different hues of one color to add depth to their pictures. In addition, they should cut the magazine into different size pieces and shapes to create texture for the art work.

For the student drawn picture, the students’ may choose to fill it in with pencil crayons, markers or with pieces of a magazine. Students must not have any white space on the paper when the art project is complete.

After the mosaic art is complete, students will frame their art with construction paper. The construction paper will accent their mosaic art and have a minimum of one inch border. Students are to sign their art pieces.

Mosaic Picture Frame

Objective

The purpose of the art activity is for students to create a mosaic picture frame for their favourite drawing.

Instructions

Students will cut out the center piece of construction paper to make a frame. Round, square, or irregular shapes are samples of the frames. Students will cut magazines into different shapes and sizes to paste onto the border of the frame. Students will have the clippings overlap and may create depth by pasting some cuttings on top of each other. Students may choose to have one color or a combination of colors.

After the frame is complete students place their frame over their drawing and cut out a back to their frame. Students will paste the drawing onto the back of the frame.

After all picture frames are complete, students may have an art show displaying their masterpieces.

Mosaic Bulletin Board

Students will assist the teacher in creating a mosaic bulletin board. The teacher will cover the bulletin board with cardboard, crepe paper, or butcher paper. Students will cut clippings from magazines and paste onto the bulletin board. After the bulletin board is cover students may glaze the board for longer lasting wear.

Students mix 2 parts white glue to 1 part water and paint over the bulletin board. The solution will give a shiny finish to the bulletin board background. Once complete students’ art pieces to showcase to the school.

Extension to Mosaic Art Activity

Teacher may instruct students to cut specific shapes, such as triangles and squares. Also, the dimensions of the shapes may be predetermined or a combination of shape dimensions.

Students estimate the amount of paper used for all the mosaic picture frames or the amount used for their personal picture frame.
