Simple suggestions to have students learning but having fun on the last few days of fun.
Engage students in an assortment of science experiments. Divide the class into groups of 4-6. Each group is responsible for creating a science experiment and sharing it with the class. The science must be interactive and allow for each student to participate in the experiment.
Students are allowed to choose any science experiment, however it must be teacher approved for safety reasons. Students are given a couple of days to produce the experiment and problem solve before presenting to the class.
Students create an ABC book on a topic. An ABC book is created by representing each letter of the alphabet with the chosen topic. The student writes a sentence or two to describe the significance of each letter and draws a picture relevant to the topic. They may research a musician, commercial product, illness, animal, career, or specific tourist location. It is important for the student to choose the teacher approved topic to ensure they will remain focused on creating the ABC books. Give students plenty of time to research their topic in the library and via the Internet.
Decide on a few theme days. Students must do some research to assist in decorations and activities for the specific theme. Beach day students must wear appropriate clothes for the beach and bring games that are typically played at the beach. As well, lunches and snacks are to align with the theme. In addition, students may read books about sharks, water safety, boating and much more. Students may also create books or comics about different topics related to the theme day. Beach day may open discussions about pollution, water resources, drinking, sun safety, cancer, healthy eating and fun activities.
Students write letters to the next year students with tips and suggestions to be successful. Students may share the fun activities and the activities that were not as interesting.
Students write the teacher a letter of what they enjoyed and what was a disappointed. It might be wise to create a survey to jog the student’s mind of the lessons that occurred throughout the year.
Students are given a postcard to write a positive attribute of a student. Student’s express what they liked best of them. Each postcard will have 4-5 students’ comments. The teacher will preselect the students for each postcard based on the student’s friends and main group members for the year. The teacher will mail the postcards and each student will receive a postcard that will put a smile on their face.
Students create a memory scrapbook with pictures, favourite sayings, and best work. Students decorate the book, cut and paste, and add stories to their memory book. The teacher may bound the book.
Students bring in a t-shirt for all students to sign. The teacher or students write the teacher’s name, grade and year on the front or back of the t-shirt. All students sign the t-shirt and add a personal touch with a favourite saying or drawing.
Play outdoor games such as baseball and soccer. Create a twist with the original games by making some new rules or adding a little extra fun to the traditional games. Baseball can be played with a dodge ball or students are only allowed to do the crab walk when playing soccer.
