Math 24, also known as Arithmetic 24 is a mathematical game that develops problem solving, quick thinking and math knowledge of basic numeracy. Pairs, groups, or an individual can play this mental math game to practice arithmetic without the use of pencil and paper.
Objective of the math game is to find a solution to a mathematical problem that equals 24. Players are given specific parameters to find the answer but can only use mental math to solve the equation.
Player is given 4 numbers ranging from 1-9. A player is not allowed to use duplicate numbers to find the answer 24. Player arranges the numbers and uses the basic operations (addition, subtraction, multiplication, and division) to total twenty four. As well, player is allowed to use brackets in the equation.
Example
Player Numbers: 2 4 5 6
Player Solution 1: (5x4) + (6-2)= 20 + 4 = 24
Player is to find at least one solution for the numbers they have chosen. Player continues to play by choosing four new numbers.

Students enjoy playing cards and the game of 24 can be used with a deck of cards. King (13), Queen (12), Jack (11), Ace (1) and the rest of the cards are at face value. Students play 24 the same way as above, except they use a deck of cards to determine their four cards. Students are able to compete with each other or play it alone. Students will still be able to find solutions with numbers from 1-13.
Math 24 is a good mental math game for students to practice numeracy skills. Students are able to play this game in a few minutes throughout the day. As well, the teacher may place 4 numbers on the board during transition time to engage the students in a quiet stimulating activity as they wait for other students.
Mental math games are a fun activity for students to practise math strategies.
